History of Our Diocese

Like a Mighty Wind

As with the birth of the Catholic Church in Jerusalem on Pentecost, the liturgical "birth day party" for our Dioceses of Lubbock came "like a mighty wind," this time sent forth from Rome by Pope John Paul II on June 17, 1983.

At that moment, we witnessed the birth of our diocese through the consecration of this local church's first bishop, a successor of the Apostles, the Most Reverend Michael J. Sheehan, DD. To this day, that same Holy Spirit moces among us "like a mighty wind" and will contunue to be with us to the end of age, just as Jesus promised his apostles. (Matthew 28:20)

The Creation of our dioicese is a testimony of grace that can inspire the Universal Church. It is a testimony to the winds of renewal within our diocese that complemented the Spirit's work throughout the world, and that brought life throug our renewal groups and movements. [Excerpt from Like a Mighty Wind...(Acts 2:2) A Pastoral Letter by Bishop Placido Rodriguez on the 25th Anniversary of Our Diocese]
